Unfortunately, snow leopards are considered a vulnerable species, in other words, their world is fragile. This big cat looks so strong and powerful but there is a fine balance needed up on those rocks. Snow leopards play a key role as a top predator, an indicator of the health of their high-altitude habitat. If snow leopards thrive, so will countless other species. The climate crisis is probably the greatest long-term threat to snow leopards. Impacts from a warming planet could result in a huge loss of the snow leopard habitat and ultimately other species.
Depictions of snow leopards often focus on their beautiful soulful faces but look further and you'll notice how long the tail of this cat is! A long tail enables agility, provides balance and wraps around the resting snow leopard as protection from the cold. The tail is the same length of the snow leopard body and sometimes longer.
Snow leopards are sacred to the mountain people of Central Asia. The snow leopard symbolises purity and a connection to the spirit world.
